CONSTRUCTION OF A CLASSROOM, BOYS LATRINE, AND KITCHEN UNIT AT MATOLANI PRIMARY SCHOOL IN KAUMA SUB-COUNTY.

Scope of works:

The project involved the construction of 1 No. Classroom Block of dimensions 9.6m * 9.0m * 3.0m high, 1 No. Kitchen Block of dimensions 9m * 5.4m and a Boys latrine Block of overall size 12.6m * 4.0m wide. The construction process of involved the following aspects:

  1. Substructure works- this works involved earthworks (site clearance, excavation, backfilling, planking & strutting, and removal of surplus materials), reinforcement works, formworks, masonry works and concrete works for foundation.
  2. Walling- this one involved construction of 200mm thick external and internal walls including gables and masonry piers. There was also the installation of a 200mm damp-proof course all around the structure and the installation of precast concrete vent grilles in accordance with the specifications.
  3. Reinforced Concrete Superstructure- this involved the reinforcement, formworks and casting of beams and columns.
  4. Roof- this involved installation of sawn cypress pre-treated timber for wall plates, trusses struts, ties, purlins and rafters. Also the installation of 28 gauge roofing sheets & ridge caps. All rain water goods were installed including gutters, downpipes and fascia boards.
  5. Doors & Windows- the doors and windows installed were mahogany timbers with all the necessary ironmongery and painting works.
  6. Finishes- this involved floor finishes (25mm thick screed) and plastering of walls (9mm thick plaster). All plastered and concreted surfaces were then painted.
  7. Electrical works- this involved installation of lighting points, switches, bulbs, sockets, meter boxes and connection to the power supply.
  8. Plumbing and Drainage Installations (Kitchen)- this involved installation of sinks, water supply connection, wastewater drainage and construction of Soakaway pit.
